Founded in Boulder, Colorado in January 2002, Art as Action is a grassroots movement of artists and activists whose mission is to use the power of collaborative art to create social change. Repeatedly, art has proven to be an extraordinary way to inspire and unite a community, and artists have always been on the forefront of social change. Our Artivist Process brings together passionate artists from various genres and enables innovative ideas for art and action to emerge naturally and evolve into groundbreaking work.
www.artasaction.org
Our performers are all people-of-conscience who are committed to contributing to the local and global community. Beyond just creating impactful art, Art as Action contributors take a community-activist role. By taking on the dual roles of advocate and educator in addition to creative artist and entertainer, the organization and performers have tackled serious and difficult themes, such as the changing shape of the American family and violence against women.

In addition to our seven full scale productions, Art as Action has brought artivism deeper into the community by donating a percentage of ticket sales and hundreds of complimentary tickets to local non-profits. In September 2011, we launched Dance for Parkinson's classes in Denver based on the Dance for PD® model originated by Mark Morris Dance and Brooklyn Parkinson Group.

Dance/Movement Therapy
Authentic Movement
www.naropa.edu/academics/graduate/psychology/somatic/dance.cfm
Dance/movement therapy assumes that a functional unity exists between the body and the mind and that therapeutic change occurs through direct experience of the present moment. One of the ways to engage the present moment is to stay awake in the body, the sensing, emoting, thinking body.

Movement provides us with a profound medium and metaphor for discovering where we are moving and where we are stuck. Dance/movement therapy is the psychotherapeutic use of movement to further the emotional, cognitive and physical integration of an individual.

Dance/movement therapists value the healing nature of the creative act, believe that movement has inner meaning and purpose, and outer expressive and communicative properties, and that body-mind synchronization is an essential component of healing.

Upon completion of the three-year degree program, graduates will receive an MA in Somatic Counseling Psychology with a concentration in Dance/Movement Therapy.

René Heredia is a leading figure in the development of Flamenco and was given the Award by the Carson Brierly Dance Library as a "Living Legend of Dance of Colorado". René was also nominated by the Colorado Dance Alliance for the "Lifetime Achievement Award of Colorado". René designs and choreographs all his dances around the student’s ability no matter which level the student is at: beginner, advanced beginner, intermediate or advanced, all the way up to semi-professional and professional.

In pure gypsy fashion, he first teaches "Compas" (rhythm) which is the most important thing you want to learn. The basis of all flamenco is compas! You will also learn to dance with the accompaniment of live guitar and not with recorded tapes as most teachers do. René brings a unique view and knowledge to flamenco with his long and varied history of performance and education with some of Spain's best dancers, singers and guitarists. It has been said that "René is a walking encyclopedia, a treasure trove of knowledge."

René Heredia is the only person left in the United States that is from the Carmen Amaya era. The only person that can teach you the "Carmen Amaya Alegrias" He remembers all the techniques of Carmen and specializes in the Alegrias. For those of you who want to learn the "Flamenco Puro" contact René about dance classes!

Flamenco Fantasy Dance Theatre, Colorado's premiere Flamenco Dance Company, since 1968, specializing in Gypsy Flamenco Dance from Spain.
www.reneheredia.com
Flamenco Fantasy Dance Theatre is a very unique dance company as it is one of the very few companies left that is doing the traditional flamenco presentations and teachings of the Spanish Gypsy and Andalusian Art of Flamenco. So much of flamenco has been watered down in the last twenty five years with the mix of other kinds of cultures that “new audiences” that see flamenco today think that what they are seeing is flamenco, but when they see the real flamenco with it’s wonderful traditional costuming, palmas, (hand clapping) pitos (finger snaps) the dancers with authentic costumes from the different provinces of Andalucia Spain they say, “We never see this kind of flamenco any more, or we don’t see this kind of flamenco even in Spain!”

What they do see today is mixture of dancers with there shirt tails hanging out dressed in cheep street clothes and the female dancers in cocktail dresses, they may have been designed by Armani with very drab colors (very anti gypsy) with no flowers in there hair no earrings, doing very little palmas or pitos and it seems that the primary color is ether black or gray, (how boring!) Then the dancers of today are dancing 0n stage and all of a sudden they stop dancing and start walking a round in circles breaking off any artistic spell they have created, if any! I was a young boy when I was learning from the era of Carmen Amaya, Mario Maya, José Greco. El guito, El Farruco and other greats. Carmen Amaya danced strait flamenco and would get thirteen curtain calls. She did not need to do all the dumb things that I see today in flamenco dance.

The real flamenco is so beautiful and has so much to say about Spain, Andalucia, the Gypsies and the way of life of all these people! Time marches on and we see less and less of the real thing!
